LLG Coast to Coast for NAACP - Day 6
Monday was a recovery day for most of our riders as we crossed into the back half of our fundraising challenge. We met our fundraising goal and will continue to ride a mile for every dollar donated over the $2800 goal.
Halfway through our effort, we’d like to recognize and share the story of George Floyd, which many of you may know already, but we feel it’s important to share as part of our coast to coast for change campaign. It’s important that we continue to say their names and raise awareness.
On May 25, 2020 George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police officers after kneeling on his neck for nearly eight minutes. Prior to his death Floyd had five children, and two grandchildren. Many of his jobs throughout life were associated with security, and was an activist against gun violence. In college he attended South Florida Community College and Texas A&M where he played football and basketball. Floyd was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina and had six siblings.
Some of his last words were “I can’t breathe” which as a cyclist, many of us have said at times. But, we do not know what George Floyd experienced, nor will we be able to comprehend the discrimination he felt throughout his life.
His death sparked a powerful civil rights movement, with all fifty states participating as well as multiple countries. Since this movement has started, we have witnessed multiple motions towards positive change, however there is still much to do and more change is still needed. We hope this is the beginning of a new narrative in our country.
