On May 1, 2020 an unnamed woman was walking her dog along the beach in San Diego, California when she was stopped by officers. The officers claimed she was publicly intoxicated and walking her dog in a no-dog zone, bystanders contradict those statements. The police department arrested her and threw her to the ground twice, once on the sand and another on asphalt. The officers were seen repeatedly twisting and forcing her arms during her arrest. The police department agreed to review the arrest footage to determine if the officers were violating any policies but no further statements have been made.
During this time of protest started by the muder of George Floyd, Los Angeles has been home to some of the largest protests in the country. However, during these protests, officers of the Los Angeles police department have been consistently using excessive force to subdue protesters. The police department has been accused 56 times in one month of officer misconduct. These accusations include rubber bullets, flash grenades, tear gas, use of batons and unlawful arrests.
