LLG Coast to Coast for NAACP - Day 1
Day 1, and the team has collectively ridden 400 miles to span from NYC to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While we can’t be together right now, we continue to be together apart, as we take on this virtual mileage challenge to raise funds for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. So far, our generous donors have contributed $1425 - thank you to all who have donated so far!
Each day, we will be sharing a story that has occurred in the city that we “arrive” in, highlighting the coast to coast problems with racism, police brutality, and injustices that we see in many American cities and towns today. After day 1, we have a story to share from Pittsburgh.
In February 2015 in Pittsburg, Devon Davis was seen and reported to law enforcement due to having a warrant out for his arrest. This incited a car chase from police, leading to a car accident involving Devon’s vehicle and another car where he fled from police on foot he was uninjured in the crash. Police caught up to him and forcefully arrested him, kicking and using a baton on multiple parts of his body, witnesses say he was not resisting arrest. Following the arrest Devon was transported to the hospital for treatment of his injuries which included a broken leg amongst others. These injuries were caused by the excessive force used by the arresting officers.
Cities across America are no stranger to police brutality, and it arises in many forms. This includes unlawful arrest, assault and abuse, sexual harassment or assault, and unlawful discrimitation amongst others.
Today, we are on to day 2, and have some catching up to do with more miles, thanks to generous donors who have kick started our fundraising efforts for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
